Year 1 have had a brilliant start to the Summer term! We have done lots of exciting things and the children have worked extremely hard.
In our Topic work this term, we have been looking at toys from the past and from the present. We were very lucky to be able to borrow a toy box from Mill Green Museum. The box contained lots of old toys, some of which we have never seen before. We then compared the old toys with our own toys, but we all agreed that all of the toys were fun to play with!
In English we have been looking at a range of different texts. One story we have looked at was Handa’s Surprise where we even got to try the different fruits of the story- lots of children enjoyed the passion fruit and mango! We then took inspiration from Handa’s Surprise and created our own surprise stories.
In art we have been looking at portraits and looked at the work of Picasso. The children drew their own portraits and then used lots of bright colours and cut up pictures to create their own abstract portraits.
In science we have been looking at plants. We have looked at the different types of plants and their parts. We spent lots of time in the school garden making observational drawings of the plants growing. We even grew our own cress seeds to make observations of the plants growth. After the cress was fully grown we all tried the cress in cheese and cress sandwiches!
We ended the term celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee, the children created their own crowns, played some lovely games with their buddy groups and joined in the whole school picnic lunch.
