Active Travel

Modeshift STARS is a free, national accreditation scheme for schools, early years settings, and businesses to promote sustainable travel like walking, cycling, and public transport. It provides a framework for organizations to create a travel plan, monitor their progress, and achieve national awards for their efforts in reducing congestion, improving road safety, and encouraging healthier lifestyles. 

Benefits for schools and communities

  • Reduces congestion: Encourages fewer car journeys, which lessens traffic around the school.

  • Improves air quality: Promotes greener travel, which can lead to better air quality.

  • Promotes health and well-being: Encourages active travel, leading to a healthier lifestyle for students.

  • Enhances road safety: Increases focus on safe travel practices for walking, cycling, and crossing roads.

  • Supports community: Strengthens the school community and encourages collaboration through travel initiatives.

Beehive

Panshanger Primary School is a member of the British Beekeepers Association.

Keeping bees can have many benefits, including:

Pollination

Bees pollinate plants, fruits, vegetables, and flowers, which can increase the number and quality of the produce. Pollination also protects crops from pests and is essential for the survival of many ecosystems.

Honey

Beekeeping allows you to harvest honey, a natural sweetener with many health benefits. 

Mental health

Working with bees can be calming and spending time outside beekeeping can help you get vitamin D. The sound of bees working can also be mentally restorative and reduce stress.

Education

Beekeeping can be a way to learn about the fascinating world of bees, including their behavior and social structures.

Connection with nature

Bees can help people reconnect with nature and their local ecology. Pollinating local flowers can also create attractive habitats for other animals.
