British Values

Introduction

The Department for Education states that there is a need “for all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” 

At Panshanger Primary School, these values are reflected in the school ethos and aims, specifically:

• to create a happy, caring and stimulating learning environment in which children can enjoy, achieve and thrive;

• to realise each child’s full potential by providing a wide range of learning opportunities for academic, social, emotional, moral, spiritual, cultural, and physical development;

• to raise self-esteem and confidence by helping each child to gain a sense of achievement and to take a pride in that achievement;

• to develop self-discipline and mutual respect for all members of the school and the wider community and encourage a caring, thoughtful attitude towards others;

• to foster a sense of responsibility for the environment and develop skills that the children will need in order be active citizens able to take their place in the wider world.

Individual Liberty

Children are helped to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence. They learn that they are responsible for their own choices and that choices have consequences which may be positive or negative.

Ideas about individual liberty, personal freedom, rights and responsibilities are explored through:
