Autumn 1
What a great start to the year! Everyone has shown so much enthusiasm for their learning and we have had lots of fun too.
In Geography, we have been learning about volcanoes. We started off by making a plasticine model to show the four layers of the earth – the inner core, outer core, mantle and the crust. We found out about the world’s most dangerous volcanoes, particularly Mount Vesuvius which destroyed the Roman town of Pompeii.
We have done lots of practical work in science, including making and excavating our own fossils and comparing soil permeability. We made the most of a sunny afternoon by discovering what the soil in our school garden is made up of. We also read a story about Mary Anning and recreated her fossil shop!
In art, we have been learning how to mix secondary and tertiary colours. We have explored the art movement ‘Fauvism’ where the artists used unrealistic colours in their landscapes. We drew our own landscapes, thinking carefully about the horizon, background and foreground and painted them in bright colours. They look fantastic!
We had a wonderful trip to the Woodhall estate where we explored the woods. It was like a summer’s day and we had great fun going on trails, bug hunting, playing a game and building dens.
We have also worked really hard on our writing, spelling and Mathematics. We can even do column addition and subtraction with exchanging! In our Thursday assemblies we have been learning some first aid skills, such as putting on a sling.
