Welcome to Panshanger School and to our Year 6 class. On this page, we post photos every half term sharing updates on the activities and learning the children are completing.

Autumn 1

PGL

Most of the class attended PGL (Cayhthorpe Court), activities included: archery, zip wire, problem solving, fencing, buggy building, abseiling and canoeing. The children demonstrated great resilience and positivity, and were wonderfully supportive to each other. We received daily compliments from PGL staff about the behaviour and manners of the children that often indicated how our school is above beyond many others when it comes to the attitude and respect of the children – well done Year 6!

English & Art

The children were incredibly imaginative and descriptive when creating their own gargoyle creatures (which came to life at night). We spent time really focusing on atmosphere and mood, and how we can create those in our writing. As part of this we looked at “show not tell” in our writing and have become increasingly confident at understanding and using this technique.

Science (Light)

The class have enjoyed exploring this topic, which including investigations using mirrors and torches. It has been great to see the ideas and cooperation within each group during investigations, including awareness and discussion about the possible variables and how to make the investigation as fair or consistent as possible. The children have then been able to be thoughtful when making connections to previous learning or when making deductions or predictions.

Anti-Racism Workshop

As part of our partnership with Stevenage FC, some of their players and coaches led us in a Premier League Primary Stars Anti-Racism workshop. The children were incredibly engaged, thoughtful and impressed the SFC representatives with their teamwork, empathy and thoughtful ideas.

Basketball House Competition & District Competition

The class had a morning “boot camp” on revising the main skills and rules of basketball before having an intra-class tournament. As part of an ongoing theme for the term, the children really impressed the Stevenage FC coaches with their attitude and teamwork.

Having won the “family” tournament (schools in our sub-district) we qualified for the district competition. Despite it being incredibly competitive and challenging, the team was incredibly focused and composed but were unable to win enough games to go through to the county tournament.

Life Skills

With focused yet fun attitude the children seem to enjoy roleplaying their learning about how to deal with burns & scalds and severe bleeding. It was great to see their maturity and independence throughout.
