At Panshanger Primary School we follow the National Curriculum Programmes of study for English, and it is our aim that in English our pupils can:

  • read fluently and with good understanding
  • develop the enjoyment of reading for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Phonics

Our phonics teaching follows the Anima Phonics Letters and Sound Updated scheme.

www.animaphonics.com

Phonics teaching begins in Nursery and continues through to Year 2. Children participate in daily lessons to learn the 44 phonemes of the English alphabetic code and the different ways of writing them (graphemes). The skills of blending and segmenting are practiced through a range of reading and writing activities. In the summer term of Year 1 children undertake the Phonics Screening Check.

It is important when supporting your child with phonics to use pure sounds. For a demonstration of each sound please visit the Anima Phonics sound board.
